Portrait of Lord Alexander Trubetskoy of Wovrn

Biography

Lord Alexander Trubetskoy, seventy years of age, is a brown bear of formidable bearing, his piercing eyes and habitual grimace doing more to announce him than any title ever could. Born in Moscow, Russia, he built his fortune and his name on the railways, and remains, even now, a builder and innovator of the old school. He is married to Lady Maria Trubetskoy, and the couple have no children. To the world, Lord Alexander is the great man of the rails, the one who put steel across half a continent, to those who are close to him, they know him as a big old softy, but they would never dare speak of it, not to a living soul.

Personality

A builder to his bones, Lord Alexander has little patience left for small talk unless it touches on engineering, ambition, or the future of his industry, though those who share his interests find a surprisingly generous host beneath the growl. His bark is very much worse than his bite, and in private, away from watching eyes, he gives a bear hug warm enough to startle those who only know his public scowl, a softness he guards carefully, having spent a lifetime cultivating the image of a strong man among his peers. He wants, above all, to see his railway company span the entire globe, and has already resolved that when it does, he will ride it end to end himself, to victorious applause. His fear is quieter and more personal: that he will never find a successor of sufficient character to inherit what he has built, which is why he seeks out promising young engineers from the world's finest universities and has scant time for corporate men who talk numbers rather than iron and ambition. So through narrowed eyes and folded arms,

  • Lord Trubetskoy constantly wonders: who among the young will prove worthy of carrying my empire forward?

Secret

What the registry does not record: at the end of each year, Lord Alexander quietly donates a tenth of his considerable annual gains to the charities of Lady Louise Hampton, a fact known to no one, not even Lady Louise herself.
